Summer economic statement welcomed
15 July 2020
As has been well documented, COVID-19 is having a significant detrimental impact on the Gatwick Diamond economy, with huge implications for employment across West Sussex and East Surrey. This is due to the area’s high exposure to an airport economy and the predominance of business sectors which have been adversely affected by the pandemic.
Responding to this week’s announcements, Jeff Alexander, Executive Director of the Gatwick Diamond Initiative said:
“We commend the Chancellor for ensuring that jobs and skills are at the forefront of his announcements this week. Our local people need jobs and our businesses need a skills pipeline that drives innovation and creativity in the future. Investing in our young people will help us ensure the Gatwick Diamond remains one of the best places in the UK for companies to thrive.
“We also welcome that the Chancellor is acting at speed to introduce progressive measures that will stimulate the broader economy, and the hospitality sector which accounts for many businesses in our towns, villages and at Gatwick Airport. We look forward to working at speed with all our partners to maximise the impacts these new initiatives and funding will bring as the full economy gets back to business.”
