Qatar Airways to Launch Direct Flights to London Gatwick
08 March 2018
Qatar Airways is pleased to announce that it will launch direct flights to Gatwick Airport commencing 22 May.
London Gatwick will be the award-winning airline’s sixth gateway into the U.K., following its upcoming launch of services to Cardiff, U.K. on 1 May.
Double-daily services to Gatwick, the airline’s second gateway to London, will provide even more flexibility and convenience to passengers travelling to the U.K. capital, and will offer enhanced connectivity for passengers flying from the U.K. to Qatar Airways’ extensive global route network of more than 150 destinations.
London, an international melting pot and one of the world’s most sophisticated cities, combines history with modern-day elegance, and offers something for everyone, whether travelling for business or leisure. In addition to famous sights such as Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square and Big Ben, the city is replete with museums and galleries, as well as world-class shopping and dining.
Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker, said: “The United Kingdom is one of our most important markets, and one in which we have increased our capacity significantly over the years. We are tremendously excited to add Gatwick as an additional gateway to London, thereby offering our passengers even more choice and convenience when travelling to this magnificent city. As our sixth gateway into the U.K., Gatwick will serve as a key new destination for business and leisure travellers alike.”
Gatwick Airport Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Stewart Wingate, said: “I am delighted to welcome Qatar Airways – one of the world’s premier airlines - to Gatwick for this exciting new double-daily service to Doha. Qatar Airways is an award-winning airline and its 150-strong route network offers Gatwick passengers yet more choice, including to destinations in Australia, New Zealand and Asia. Qatar is an important business destination, particularly for those working in finance, infrastructure, oil and gas and those spending time relaxing can do so in some first class facilities. This new route to Qatar compliments Gatwick’s flourishing long haul network which now covers over 60 direct routes to destinations across the globe.”
The new service between Doha and London Gatwick, which will be part of the joint business with British Airways, will be operated by a Boeing Dreamliner 787 aircraft, featuring 22 seats in Business Class, offering passengers direct aisle access with its 1-2-1 configuration, and 232 seats in Economy Class.
On board the Qatar Airways Boeing 787 Dreamliner, lower altitude-equivalent pressure, improved air quality and optimal humidity coupled with large, electronically dimmable windows create dramatic vistas and provide passengers with extra natural light. Full-spectrum LED lighting will help them adjust to changing time zones, allowing passengers to arrive at their destination feeling refreshed.
Gatwick is the world’s most efficient single runway airport and flies to more destinations than any other UK airport. More than £2.7 billion is being invested in transforming facilities with passengers already benefitting from a re-developed North Terminal, new piers and first class catering and retail outlets. Gatwick is also a multi-award-winning airport and has picked up global and national awards for service quality, innovation and sustainability. Situated just 30 minutes to central London by train, this year also sees the launch of a huge uplift in rail services with brand new trains due to leave the airport for London every 3 minutes.
Qatar Airways currently serves London Heathrow, Manchester, Birmingham, and Edinburgh, with service to Cardiff to commence on 1 May 2018. The award-winning carrier now connects travellers to more cities than ever before, with recent launches to Pattaya, Thailand; Penang, Malaysia and Australia’s capital city, Canberra.
As well as being voted Skytrax ‘Airline of the Year’ by travellers from around the world, Qatar’s national flag carrier also won a raft of other major awards at the 2017 ceremony, including ‘Best Airline in the Middle East,’ ‘World’s Best Business Class’ and ‘World’s Best First Class Airline Lounge.’
Qatar Airways operates a modern fleet of more than 200 aircraft to a network of more than 150 key business and leisure destinations across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific, North America and South America. The airline is launching a host of exciting new destinations in 2018, including Thessaloniki and Mykonos in Greece; Cardiff, U.K and Malaga, Spain, to name just a few.
