Gatwick Diamond Initiative Welcomes Autumn Statement
23 November 2016
Jeff Alexander, Executive Director of the Gatwick Diamond Initiative has welcomed the Chancellor's 2016 autumn statement.
Reacting to today’s announcements, he said: "I am pleased that the Chancellor is driving forward the momentum of economic growth that we have experienced in the past year. He is clearly encouraging innovation and backing business. His focus on productivity, housing, research and development (R&D) and economic infrastructure is valued as they are all pressure points which impact on the Gatwick Diamond economy.
“We particularly welcome the announcement of £23bn to be spent on innovation and infrastructure over five years. R&D plays an important part of the Gatwick Diamond’s economy as we have the highest volume and concentration of Health and Life Science jobs in the Coast to Capital region.
“Whilst the details have yet to be clarified, we hope the Gatwick Diamond can capitalise on this new fund and the £1.1bn extra investment in English local transport networks, as the Government cannot afford to be complacent about our area’s ability to continue to generate the £22.3 billion in GDP it creates each year for the country, without commensurate investment.”
