Manor Royal Signage Project shortlisted for national award

11 October 2016

A £270,000 wayfinding project, which has transformed signage and directions around Manor Royal business district, has been shortlisted for a national BID award.

The project is in the running to win one of British Business Improvement Districts’ (BIDs) Proud Projects Awards.

Every year British BIDs, a national organisation representing the Business Improvement District industry, celebrates outstanding projects throughout the UK.  The Manor Royal BID wayfinding project has made it onto the shortlist from over 50 entries from around the country, as judged by a panel of business and industry experts.

Manor Royal BID’s Executive Director Steve Sawyer was delighted to hear the news.  “Everything the BID does is part of making Manor Royal as good a place as possible for those who work or visit here.  People used to tell us that it was hard to find their way around the business district. The signage wasn’t good enough, particularly for visitors, so the wayfinding project was all about improving the look of the place and its user-friendliness."

Consultancy firm Design JD was commissioned to review existing signage and help come up with a more uniform and coherent design, working closely with the BID team.  Following a complex planning process, 185 new signs were erected around the business district, making it more welcoming for both vehicle users and pedestrians.  The modern signs include monoliths at the key entrance ways, vertical road markers, pedestrian map boards and contemporary colour-coded street name signs. Distinctive lamp-post banners have also been placed along the main avenues.  Installation of the signs involved Manor Royal based companies Fast Signs and Signs Express.

The project, which was designed and delivered by the Manor Royal BID, benefited from grant funding from West Sussex County Council and Crawley Borough Council (as well as a contribution from the BID Levy paid by Manor Royal companies).  It is just one of a number of projects the Manor Royal BID is delivering over a five-year period to improve the area as a place to trade and work.

The team will find out if they have won the award on 10 November.
