Decathlon coming to Crawley

14 March 2016

Europe’s largest sports retailer is set to open its first Crawley store in Queens Square in the summer.

Decathlon, a family owned business which opened its first store in Lille, France, in 1976, will be taking over the former Body Shop and adjacent units in June.

The store, which is growing in the UK and Asia but already a ‘go to’ brand in France and Spain, offers high quality Decathlon brand products for 70 sports over two floors.

With an ethos of making sport accessible to all and a culture of passion for sport, the brand makes sure its products are great value while offering a wealth of sport knowledge.

New store manager, Federico Fraguela, said: “We’re really excited to be opening in Crawley. This is one of only two town centre stores so it’s quite a new step for us.

“Crawley has a lot to offer, we saw it as a great opportunity due its great catchment and excellent sport facilities and range of clubs. We very much like all the work that’s due to take place around the town centre too, particularly in Queens Square which will give us a great space to hold community events.”

Decathlon work closely with the local sports clubs, schools and other community groups, often offering opportunities for free sports equipment through competitions and their charitable foundation ‘The Foundation’.

The new store is set to recruit around 30 local sports enthusiasts and details on how to apply will be publicised soon. Along with this, Decathlon are looking to build strong relationships with sporting groups and individuals who could be brand ambassadors.

Cllr Peter Smith, Cabinet member for Planning and Economic Development, said: “This is fantastic news for Crawley and we look forward to welcoming Decathlon into the Queens Square.  They will make a significant additional attraction for both our residents and visitors alike.

“I’m particularly pleased that attracting this great new retailer to Crawley is confirmation of the success of our strategy for regenerating the town centre and comes as a direct result of our efforts to build strong relationships with stakeholders, including both Decathlon and the building’s owner. Decathlon have been clear that the council’s decision to press ahead with the transformation of Queens Square directly influenced their decision to invest in Crawley town centre.

“We look forward to working with Decathlon to help them become part of our Crawley community.”
