Gatwick Diamond Initiative shines a light on local manufacturing excellence
16 June 2015
Over 100 local leaders from the public and private sector recently gathered to identify and discuss opportunities, debate threats and celebrate the success of the £20.7 billion Gatwick Diamond economy at the annual Gatwick Diamond Economic Growth Forum.
The Gatwick Diamond is a powerhouse of the South East and national economy and, at the heart of the region, resides a highly successful advanced manufacturing cluster. This may come as a surprise to many because they are not highly visible businesses - they don’t operate from noisy factories with smoking chimneys. Instead, they include some of the country’s most successful specialised manufacturing businesses producing cutting edge, high-tech, high-value products and creating skilled employment opportunities.
Rosemary French, executive director of the Gatwick Diamond Initiative and key sponsor of the 2015 Gatwick Diamond Economic Growth Forum, explained: “A number of globally significant, advanced manufacturing companies have chosen to make the Gatwick Diamond area their home. Where else in the country can you find two global leaders in the manufacture of pioneering cancer treatment equipment? Elekta and Varian Medical Systems have both been drawn here by the unique combination of infrastructure, environment, supply chain and talent.”
The annual Gatwick Diamond Economic Growth Forum brings together the public and private sector to identify ways to make the most of the Gatwick airport economy and generate the ideal environment for continued economic and employment growth.
