Manor Royal Businesses Back Gatwick Expansion

17 December 2014

Businesses on Manor Royal have shown their support for plans to create a second runway at Gatwick Airport.

At the business district’s annual showcase event held at Thales on Thursday 20 November, 72 per cent of the companies in attendance gave expansion at Gatwick the thumbs up during an interactive electronic voting system.

There was a small minority (nine per cent) who admitted they could be persuaded to support the scheme if their reservations were overcome, while seven per cent said they were yet to make a decision. Sixty one per cent also made it clear that they would like to know more about the second runway.

Manor Royal BID executive director Steve Sawyer said expansion at Gatwick has been, and will continue to be, an important issue for the business district. “The level of support among businesses that took part in the electronic voting session at our showcase event was clear,” he said. “It reinforces our view that Gatwick expansion remains a good option and one that Manor Royal businesses generally support.

“We recognise the economic benefits of a second runway at Gatwick and believe this is an option that can be delivered more easily, with less harm and at a better price than expanding Heathrow. There are also legitimate arguments to be made for ensuring there is genuine competition for Heathrow - which only Gatwick can provide.

“In declaring our support, however, we still feel there is more information that we, as a representative body of Manor Royal, need to know to ensure we are able to realise the full benefits of expansion without compromising the essential assets that make Manor Royal and the area generally attractive.

“We will continue to work with Gatwick to ensure that those issues affecting Manor Royal and its businesses remain on the agenda and are well understood. Importantly, we want to make sure that Manor Royal businesses get the information they need and can fully participate in all stages of the consultation and are able to express their opinion.”
