LONDON GATWICK WELCOMES FIRST LONG HAUL 'HUB-BUSTING' DREAMLINER

15 July 2013

London Gatwick yesterday welcomed the first regular-service Thomson 787 Dreamliner to the airport for the first time, ahead of scheduled services to Phuket later in the year.

The regular scheduled services to Cancun and Orlando, Florida will provide passengers with a fantastic in-flight experience, from dynamic LED lighting that can mimic dawn and dusk and up to 34 inches legroom in economy and 38 inches in premium.

The aircraft also has environmental benefits as the 787 Dreamliner has a reduction of twenty percent in fuel and CO2 emissions and offers a 60 percent smaller noise footprint.

Gatwick and Thomson already serve Cancun and Florida, but from today passengers will be able to fly to these popular leisure destinations on a scheduled long haul service on the Dreamliner, before a new, direct route to Phuket is opened for the winter in November. For summer 14 Thomson will also be introducing routes to Mauritius and Puerto Vallarta in Mexico, flying from Gatwick on the Dreamliner.

London Gatwick has already proved that new direct long-haul routes from the UK can be supported by providing direct routes to Vietnam and China. From autumn 2013, Gatwick will also offer Europe’s first direct route to Jakarta, Indonesia.

The Dreamliner is set to revolutionise air travel, offering more access to direct flights to new destinations that are further afield. Airlines, which plan decades ahead, are investing heavily in these new generation long-range aircraft and moving away from the traditional ‘hub and spoke’ model that generates transfer passengers.

Matt Wood, Head of Airline Relations at London Gatwick, said: “We are delighted to welcome the first scheduled Thomson 787 Dreamliner to London Gatwick today. This is an exciting milestone for us as this innovative aircraft offers our airlines even more potential to create new long haul routes in the future from Gatwick. We look forward to continuing this success and we continue to work closely with all of our airlines to provide the best passenger experience.”

Chris Browne, Managing Director of Thomson Airways, comments: “After much anticipation we are delighted to celebrate the first long haul flight from Gatwick. This is a key milestone for the company and as the first airline in the UK to take delivery we hope our customers will enjoy the unique experience of this revolutionary aircraft.

“The introduction of the Dreamliner is a major milestone in our journey of modernising the holiday experience. Customers travelling from Gatwick will be amazed at the unique look, feel and service – all of which will ensure the Thomson holiday experience starts as soon as they step on board this fabulous new aircraft.”
