GatwickAirport announced today that Turkish Airlines – the national flag carrier of Turkey and member of the Star Alliance – is to commence a daily Gatwick-Istanbul service from December 20th, 2011.

Flights will land daily into Gatwick from Istanbul at 1250 and depart from Gatwick’s North Terminal at 1355, arriving into Istanbul at 1945. Turkish Airlines will operate the Airbus 321-200, which flies 195 passengers in a typical two-class cabin layout.

Istanbul, dubbed the ‘City of the World’s Desire,’ has an abundance of historic buildings, new art galleries and museums. Travellers can enjoy the city’s top sites such as TopkapiPalace and the Blue Mosque, do a spot of shopping in the Grand Bazaar or simply sit at a sidewalk café and sip Turkish tea.

Guy Stephenson, Gatwick Airport’s Chief Commercial Officer said: “We are pleased that Turkish Airlines has chosen to operate a daily service to Istanbul from Gatwick this Winter. Passengers will not only be able to enjoy the rich history of this magical city but also connect onto Turkish Airlines’ extensive global network and visit countries in the Middle and Far East.

“We are competing with other airports in London and the South East in order to give passengers the greatest choice of destinations to fly to. We already offer a choice of over 200 destinations, which is more than any other airport in the UK. Turkish Airlines operate scheduled services to 148 global and 42 domestic destinations, so when they commence operations from Gatwick in mid December our passengers will have even more travel options than they do today.”

Chief Marketing Officer of Turkish Airlines Faruk Cizmecioglu said: “We are very happy to start flying from London Gatwick to more than 190 destinations around the world as from 20th December.

“This year, Turkish Airlines were awarded the Best Airline of Europe by Skytrax. Following on from this prestigious title we are proud to announce our exciting new link with GatwickAirport. As part of our commitment to expansion throughout the UK, Gatwick will increase our UK portfolio to five airports. In turn we will be increasing our flight frequency in London from 30 flights a week, to 37 throughout this winter.

“Our priority is the comfort of our passengers. We have the best in-flight Economy Class meals for which Turkish Airlines has also won an award, ensuring our passengers a relaxing long haul journey to destinations such as Bangkok, Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Johannesburg, Cape Town and beyond.”

Gatwick is competing to grow to become London’s airport of choice and has recently attracted AirAsia X, Vietnam Airlines and Hong Kong Airlines to the airport, and Lufthansa has recently launched double daily services to Frankfurt. Other airlines to choose Gatwick include airberlin and Norwegian Air Shuttle.
