The Gatwick Diamond hosted Jonathan Shaw MP, the Minister for the South East, on Tuesday 15th September 2009, when he attended a meeting of the South East Economic Delivery Council (SEEDC) at the Arora Hotel in Crawley which reviewed how the recession is being felt locally and the wider South East and what more could be done by the public sector.

SEEDC, of which Mr Shaw is Co-Chair with Jim Brathwaite, Chair of the South East England Development Agency, leads the regional response to the economic challenges facing the South East, feeding regional and local intelligence into central government, as well as agreeing collective action to tackle specific issues affecting the South East economy. Its members come from business organisations such as the CBI and the British Chambers of Commerce, public sector representatives from the Government Office of the South East and the South East Strategic Partnership - as well as the voluntary and community sectors in the region.

Local business leaders joined Mr Shaw and members of the Council after the meeting to brief him on key issues within the Gatwick Diamond - especially where Government action could support the recovery.  Later in the afternoon, Mr Shaw visited Virgin Atlantic at their Crew Training Centre in Crawley to hear how they are faring in the present economic climate.

Alistair Smith, who has recently been appointed the Gatwick Diamond's Executive Director, welcomed the visit.  "The SEEDC is one of the key regional bodies advising the government on its policy towards business and the economy and we're delighted to welcome members to the Diamond.  As a key economic area in the South East, our performance in dealing with the recession and preparing for the recovery will be of interest to the Minister; at the same time, we'll take the opportunity to raise our key concerns - such as funding improvements at Gatwick Airport Station and the establishment of a University Centre here."

L-R: Jonathan Shaw, Minister for South East; Rob Douglas, SEEDA Chairman Designate; David Butcher, Chairman of the Gatwick Diamond Management Group; Jim Brathwaite, SEEDA Chairman; John Donaldson, Executive Director Arora Hotel; Alistair Smith, Executive Director Gatwick Diamond.
