Journey times to and from Gatwick Airport will be significantly improved by the construction of a new link road connecting the airport with major routes.

The airport's owner, BAA, has just awarded the £850,000 road building contract to family-owned construction, civil engineering and property services company, Osborne.

Work on the new road is expected to start in July 2009 and will take 24 weeks to complete.

The new link will connect the airport's perimeter road with the A23 trunk road which, in turn, connects traffic to the M23 motorway running north-south. The project is designed to replace a busy circulation road that has been closed to public use since July 2005 - its route ran beneath the South Terminal building.

Osborne's contract includes the construction of the road as well as the creation of a signal-controlled junction on the A23 and a priority junction on the Perimeter Road North.

As well as enhancing security, construction of the road will improve journey times for both private vehicles and public transport - several bus routes were diverted following the closure.
