Vital statistics

It's the economic heart of the South East, accounting for some 350,000 jobs and a GDP of £13 billion. There are some 26,330 VAT registered businesses, and the area has GDP growth of 2.5%.   The population is 648,000 and employment is strong at 97%; 80% of that is in the service sector. 92% of the population holds an academic qualification, 34% hold a degree, both above South East and UK averages (Source ONS, 2006). Gatwick, the 2nd largest UK airport and the 6th largest in the world, handles 33m passengers a year.
