The Gatwick Diamond is an economic area in its own right, accounting for a GDP of some £13 billion and around 350,000 jobs. To become a world class location means strengthening the capacity of the area to generate wealth and prosperity. This must be done in a sustainable way that keeps the towns in the Diamond and neighbouring villages attractive places to live and work, enhancing their facilities and transport connections whilst protecting the natural beauty of the surrounding countryside.
Improving the productivity and competitiveness of businesses is central to this, creating a vibrant economic area where businesses feel confident about growth and new businesses move into the region or are encouraged to start-up. The initiative aims to ensure that Gatwick Airport remains a cornerstone of the economy, but at the same time seeks to encourage growth of non-airport related business to ensure the economy is diverse and can compete across many different sectors. Bringing together Surrey and West Sussex County Councils, six local authorities and other public sector organisations, there have already been major advances in planning, transport improvements and jointly identifying areas for development. Lobbying on major issues affecting the region and a commitment to working closely across boundaries on integrated policies will also increase the attractiveness of the area for employers, increasing opportunities for jobs, new skills and training, ultimately releasing untapped potential and raising aspirations.
